“Community-based Approaches to Working with Urban Refugees: The Case of Iraqis in Jordan”

Presented by:

Scott Harding, Associate Professor, University of Connecticut, School of Social Work

Kathryn Libal, Assistant Professor, University of Connecticut, School of Social Work

The presenters will discuss the importance of community-based approaches for meeting the basic needs of refugees and forced migrants residing in urban areas, using the case of Iraqis in Amman, Jordan.

Based on research they have been conducting since 2007, they will briefly highlight the challenges displaced Iraqis face in Jordan and other neighboring countries, describe the efforts of local and international NGOs to assess and meet Iraqis’ needs, and address the importance of community-based approaches to refugee assistance.

The presenters seek to engage audience members in a dialogue comparing the Jordanian case with that of urban refugees in Cape Town and other locales in South Africa.
