Can Burundi secure its fledgling democracy?

After 16 years of violence, Burundi now has a chance to install democracy. As the four-month poll process gets underway, with the last rebel group, FNL, having finally joined the government, the ruling CNDD-FDD now has to defend its rule through the election process. Sylvester Maphosa, an analyst from African democracy institute Idasa’s States in Transition Observatory, analyses Burundi’s options, read in full here, and sees some cause for optimism, despite escalating tensions among political actors.
