Is the Media a Critical Ally of South Africa’s Democracy?

You are warmly invited to the second debate in the Idasa series

“Building Democratic Societies”:

Is the Media a Critical Ally of South Africa’s Democracy?

Much has been said about the quality of and level of public discourse in South Africa, but how has the media contributed to the status of leaders whose voices divide rather than unite?

Do the South African media reflect and inform the voice of ordinary South Africans?

Has the media aided political leaders in polarising debates according to race and class?

Do we have real freedom of expression in South Africa?

Do the media sensationalize and trivialize politics?

Are citizens simply too cynical because the discourse is too destructive?

How can citizens use new and social media to create spaces for political contestation?

If you have strong views on these issues, please join us and participate in the second installment of our Building Democratic Societies debate series.
