Agricultural reforms in Tanzania to kill cash crops, gov’t warned

The production of some important cash crops in Tanzania is likely to collapse as farmers find it hard to adopt the proposed sector reforms, according to the World Bank research. Cashew nuts, Coffee and Maize farmers are likely to reduce the size of land under cultivation or completely abandon the crops due the reforms. For instance, the warehouse receipts system adopted in 2007 has not benefited farmers in regions like Mtwara as it caused the reemergence of single marketing channel. Read this story here.
