Locals Work Together to Keep the Peace – Bitou

Kwanokuthula community in Bitou municipality (Plettenberg Bay) has seen political tensions simmering in the lead up to the election. The Election Monitoring Network (EMN) deployed monitors there to provide a visible presence of civil society within the politically tense communities. As part of the process of this deployment EMN met with different stakeholders including the Mayor of Bitou, the South African Police cluster of Southern Cape represented by Assistant Commissioner Mondisa, members of the ANC, members of COPE and IEC mediation facilitators.

The peace monitoring process is a delicate balance for the next 8 days. The enthusiasm of the parties to start meeting with immediate effect and ensure that the process remains on track is a very encouraging sign. The commitment of the Police to provide whatever support is required to maintain law and order is also encouraging. And the IEC’s commitment to remain engaged in upholding of agreements is encouraging.
